Sophie
Position Title: Advocate for People Experiencing Homelessness
Host Site: UPMC Second Avenue Commons Health Clinic (700 Second Avenue)
Why did you join NHC Pittsburgh?
I joined NHC Pittsburgh because I wanted to bridge the gap in financial and mobile access to healthcare. As an NHC fellow, my service will include hands-on clinical, community, and social justice work, allowing me to address gaps in healthcare with a multidisciplinary approach.
What do you hope to gain or learn during your service term?
I hope to come to better understand the complex issues behind each person's health. Serving in collaboration with multiple teams and organizations, I also hope to improve my communication and problem-solving skills to creatively approach situations.
What are you most looking forward to during your service term?
I look forward to meeting new people and learning more about them. I'm excited to experience a new city, a new landscape, and a new community.
What is something you appreciate about serving in Pittsburgh/at your Host Site?
Second Avenue Commons has the clinic, the shelter, and an engagement space, which means that you are often more than a clinic staff; you are a friend and community member for the patients.
What are your plans after your service as an AmeriCorps member?
I will be applying to medical school.
