Why did you join NHC Pittsburgh?
I joined NHC Pittsburgh because I believe deeply in the power of community-rooted service and the importance of accessible, equitable healthcare. As someone whose journey has been shaped by the support of others, I feel a responsibility to give back in ways that are both intentional and impactful. NHC’s commitment to addressing social determinants of health aligns with my passion for serving underserved communities and advancing equity through direct service.
What do you hope to gain or learn during your service term?
During my service term, I hope to deepen my understanding of how healthcare systems can better support patients beyond clinical care. I am especially interested in learning more about patient navigation, community health outreach, and addressing barriers such as access, trust, and health literacy. I also hope to strengthen my ability to serve diverse populations with empathy, cultural awareness, and responsiveness.
What are you most looking forward to during your service term?
I am most looking forward to building meaningful relationships with patients and being a consistent, supportive presence in their healthcare journey. I’m excited to contribute to creating an environment where patients feel seen, respected, and empowered to take charge of their health.
What is something you appreciate about serving in Pittsburgh/at your Host Site?
I appreciate Pittsburgh’s strong sense of community and resilience. At UPMC Shadyside Family Health Center, I value being part of a team that is deeply committed to patient-centered care and meeting people where they are. It’s meaningful to serve in a space that prioritizes both compassion and quality care.
What are your plans after your service as an AmeriCorps member?
After my service, I will be pursuing a Dual Master of International Development and Juris Doctor at the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs. I plan to build a career at the intersection of law, policy, and international development, working to design and implement equitable systems that expand access to resources, healthcare, and opportunity for communities both in the United States and across the Global South.
